Anti-Wrinkle Injections: Your Complete Guide

6 min readBy Olivia Minot

Anti-wrinkle injections — commonly known as Botox — are the world's most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatment. When administered correctly, they create a naturally refreshed appearance by relaxing the muscles responsible for expression lines. At The Skin Clinic Essex, every treatment is tailored to your facial anatomy to ensure results that look natural, never frozen.

How Do Anti-Wrinkle Injections Work?

Anti-wrinkle injections use a purified protein (botulinum toxin type A) to temporarily relax specific facial muscles. When these muscles are relaxed, the overlying skin smooths out, reducing the appearance of dynamic wrinkles — lines caused by repeated facial expressions such as frowning, squinting, and raising the eyebrows. Results typically appear within 3–7 days and last 3–4 months.

Which Areas Can Be Treated?

The most commonly treated areas are the forehead (horizontal lines), the glabella (frown lines between the brows), and the crow's feet (lines around the eyes). We also treat a range of other areas including the masseter muscles (jaw slimming and teeth grinding), downturned mouth corners, smoker's lines, dimpled chin, gummy smile, eyebrow lift, bunny lines, lip flip, neck bands, and hyperhidrosis (excessive underarm sweating).

What to Expect During Treatment

The treatment takes approximately 20–30 minutes. A series of small injections are made into the targeted muscles using a very fine needle. Most clients describe the sensation as a mild pinch. There is no anaesthetic required. You can return to your normal activities immediately, though we advise avoiding strenuous exercise and lying flat for 4 hours after treatment.

Results & Aftercare

Results begin to appear within 3–7 days and reach their peak at 2 weeks. A complimentary review appointment is offered at 2 weeks to assess results and make any minor adjustments. Results last 3–4 months on average. Regular treatments can train the muscles over time, meaning results may last longer with continued treatment.
